Kogin Embroidery – 2-Hour Introductory Course Course Description

This introductory course presents Kogin embroidery, a traditional Japanese counted-thread embroidery from the Tsugaru region of Aomori, Japan. Participants will learn the cultural background, basic tools, and fundamental stitching techniques of Kogin, and will complete a small sampler or begin a simple motif during the session. No prior embroidery experience is required.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

  • Learn the history and cultural significance of Kogin embroidery

  • Become familiar with essential Kogin tools and materials

  • Understand how to count fabric threads accurately

  • Practice the basic Kogin running stitch

  • Learn to read a simple traditional Kogin pattern

  • Create a small stitched sampler or motif

Course Content

1. Introduction to Kogin

  • Origins of Kogin embroidery

  • Traditional use in northern Japan

  • Distinction between Kogin and other sashiko techniques

2. Materials and Tools

  • Fabrics suitable for Kogin embroidery

  • Thread types and color choices

  • Needles and basic tools

  • Fabric preparation and handling

3. Basic Stitching Techniques

  • Counting fabric threads

  • Stitch direction and spacing

  • Maintaining even tension

  • Starting and ending threads without knots

4. Traditional Kogin Patterns

  • Reading Kogin charts (graph patterns)

  • Introduction to simple traditional motifs

  • Understanding pattern repetition and symmetry

5. Hands-On Practice

  • Stitching straight-line exercises

  • Stitching a simple traditional Kogin motif

  • Individual guidance and correction

6. Finishing and Care

  • Securing threads neatly

  • Pressing and caring for finished embroidery

  • Suggestions for turning the sampler into a small item (coaster, patch, decorative piece)

Materials

  • Kogin or even-weave cotton/linen fabric

  • Kogin or cotton embroidery thread

  • Kogin needle

  • Scissors

  • Printed pattern chart

Outcome

By the end of the 2-hour course, participants will have:

  • A completed Kogin sampler or

  • A clearly started traditional Kogin motif to finish at home

  • A foundational understanding of Kogin embroidery techniques
