DESCRIPTION:\nLearn the mindful art of bonsai pruning.\n\n\n\nJoin Ben Redmond of Portland Garden Services for a hands-on introduction to the art and practice of bonsai. Ben is a member of the Aesthetic Pruners Association, an experienced gardener, and a licensed landscape contractor based in Portland’s Lents neighborhood. He runs a values-forward company rooted in care for both plants and people.\nBen brings an extensive background in tree pruning, including over ten years of studying bonsai and a two-year apprenticeship with expert Lucy Davenport, a mentor and specialist in Japanese maple pruning and health. As a fourth-generation orchardist, pruning is his greatest joy and a lifelong craft.\nIn this workshop, you’ll:\n\nLearn about the origins and philosophy of bonsai\nExplore the relationship between tree, grower, and design\nDiscover how to work from the roots up to establish structure and balance\nPractice pruning techniques to shape and refine your tree\nLearn about pot selection, setup, and long-term care\n\nThis session offers a blend of instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice to introduce you to the living art of bonsai and leave with both new skills and a deeper appreciation for the trees we tend and our relationship to nature.\nGather together at 10:30.
